Picture this, you step into a lobby that smells like green clover and aloe, a live pianist is tickling the ivories, and a birdcage elevator straight out of the Victorian era glides silently upward. You aren't in a period drama; you are at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. For years, people have debated whether this "fancy" hotel is too stuffy for a family vacation or the ultimate bucket list stay, so we decided to find out for ourselves.
In June 2025, we packed our bags to find out for ourselves.
Walking into the main building still takes your breath away. The five-story atrium is massive, yet somehow cozy. It feels luxurious, but in a way that says, "Yes, you can wear Mickey ears here." Being on the monorail loop puts you in the center of the action. You can see the castle. You can hear the train whistle.
The Pros: Why We Loved It
We found plenty of reasons to smile during our stay. If convenience and luxury are your love languages, the Grand Floridian speaks them fluently.
1. Transportation Options Galore
Getting around Disney World can sometimes feel like a logistical nightmare. At the Grand Floridian, it feels like a breeze. This is arguably the best-connected resort on the property.
You have the classic Monorail, which stops right at the resort. One stop and you are at the Magic Kingdom. It is incredibly convenient, especially when dragging tired kids back to the room for a mid-day nap.
But the real MVP for us was the walking path. In recent years, Disney completed the walkway connecting the Grand Floridian directly to the Magic Kingdom. It is a lovely, peaceful stroll that takes about 10-15 minutes. No waiting in lines, no squeezed monorails—just you and a pleasant walk.
We also utilized the water taxi. Taking a boat across the lagoon with the wind in your hair is a magical way to start or end the day. And for Epcot, you just hop the monorail to the Transportation and Ticket Center and transfer. You barely have to touch a bus unless you are heading to Animal Kingdom or Hollywood Studios.
2. Premium Dining Steps from Your Room
If you are a foodie, this resort is your playground. You don't just have a food court; you have a culinary destination.
We indulged in some serious eating. Citricos was a highlight, offering a refined menu inspired by "Mary Poppins Returns" that felt elegant without being pretentious. The Florida Key Lime Pie is something we still dream about.
For a more casual vibe, the Grand Floridian Cafe is an unsung hero. It is often easier to get a reservation here than at other spots, and the breakfast is fantastic (get the lobster benedict).
For fun with the kids, there’s Park 1900, the onsite character dining that offers tableside meet & greets with princesses, a prince, and even Maribel from Encanto. This buffet satisfies both foodies and picky eaters.
Of course, there is Victoria & Albert’s for the ultra-fine dining crowd, and Narcoossee’s on the water. Having this level of dining just an elevator ride away elevates the entire vacation. You don't have to travel across the property to find a great meal; the great meals come to you.
3. The "New" Rooms: Recently Renovated
The rooms have been refreshed with a "Mary Poppins" theme that is subtle and sophisticated. Think soft blues, clean lines, and elegant touches rather than in-your-face cartoon characters.
The space feels lighter and airier. The bathrooms are modern and bright, it feels like a luxury hotel. The beds were incredibly comfortable—especially after walking 20,000 steps in the heat.
The One Con:
1. The Price Tag
Let’s not sugarcoat it: staying here can hurt the bank account. The Grand Floridian is consistently one of the most expensive resorts at Disney World.
You are paying for the location, the prestige, and the convenience. If you are a budget-conscious traveler, seeing the nightly rate might make you cringe a bit.
The Verdict: Is It Worth It?
So, is the Grand Floridian worth the splurge?
Yes, if:
Convenience is King: You have small children and need quick access to the Magic Kingdom for naps and breaks.
You Love Dining: You plan to spend significant time enjoying the resort's restaurants and bars.
It’s a Special Occasion: For a honeymoon, anniversary, or once-in-a-lifetime trip, the atmosphere is unbeatable.
You Want the Resort Life: You plan to spend plenty of time at the pools and enjoying the lobby rather than rope-dropping parks every day.
No, if:
You Are Park Warriors: If you only use your room to shower and sleep, save your money and stay at a Value or Moderate resort.
Budget is Tight: The stress of the cost might overshadow the relaxation of the vacation.
Our stay in June 2025 was memorable and the location remains unbeatable. It is a bucket-list experience that every Disney fan should try at least once.
