After years of the delay, due to a variety of reasons, the Government’s REAL ID requirement is now set and approaching fast and will be required for domestic travel.

What is REAL ID:

Originally passed in 2005, this sets minimum standards for all 50 states for issuing Driver’s Licenses. It has taken nearly 20 years to get all states ready to meet the minimum requirements set by the Federal Government.

How does REAL ID Impact Traveling?

A REAL ID compliant Driver’s License will be needed to get on a domestic flight beginning May 7th, 2025. If you do not have a REAL ID driver’s license you can also use your valid passport.

How do I get REAL ID?

If your state was already REAL ID compliant then this would have been updated the last time you renewed or received your driver’s license. If your state has just recently complied, and you have not renewed, you may have to renew early to make sure you meet the new standards.

All REAL ID compliant Driver’s Licenses will have one of these symbols in the upper right hand corner.

Each state will use one of these five symbols to show your Driver’s License is REAL ID compliant
